In Deadlock your item build does not have to be static. Strong players buy part of their slots reactively — that is, in response to specific threats from the enemy team. This approach is called counter-building: you read the opposing lineup, notice who is dominating the match, and spend souls on items that directly shut down the enemy's strengths. The right counter item at the right moment is often worth more than yet another damage upgrade.
When to switch to reactive purchases
Early in the match, priority goes to the basics — farming, survivability and steady damage. Reactive items become important after the first skirmishes, once it is clear which enemy hero is the main problem. If the enemy Abrams refuses to die because of lifesteal while your damage seems to vanish into thin air, that is a signal to delay your next damage item and buy something that changes the rules of the fight.
Key reactive items
A handful of active and passive items cover the most common threats, and they are worth knowing by heart.
Healbane applies a strong reduction to a target's healing and lifesteal. It is the first answer to heroes and builds that survive on lifesteal — for example an Abrams with Siphon Life, or any carry stacking lifesteal items. A single player with Healbane can turn an 'unkillable' tank into an ordinary target.
Knockdown is an active item that slams an enemy to the ground, interrupting channels and movement. It is invaluable against flying and mobile heroes: those who rely on flight, dashes and jumps to enter and leave fights. Knockdown also cancels many ultimates the instant it lands, so save it for a key target rather than wasting it.
Debuff Remover instantly clears crowd control and negative effects from you, and grants a short burst of resistance as well. It is a lifesaver against teams with heavy crowd control — stuns, slows and roots. Bought in time, it lets you survive the enemy's combo and turn the fight in your favor.
Do not limit yourself to three items. Metal Skin grants temporary bullet immunity against gun carries, spirit and bullet armor reduce incoming damage of the relevant type, while Reactive Barrier and Return Fire punish aggressive engages. The wider your arsenal of answers, the fewer free plays the enemy gets.
How to read the enemy lineup
The core skill of counter-building is observation. Watch the scoreboard, track who deals the most damage to you and which type — weapon or ability. Buy bullet armor against gun damage and spirit armor against abilities. Do not buy a counter item 'just in case': wasted souls weaken your main build. React to a real threat, not an imagined one.
Counter-building does not replace a good core build — it complements it. Keep one or two flex slots open for reactive purchases and update them as the match unfolds. A team that adapts almost always outplays an opponent running a memorized build.
