McGinnis is one of Deadlock's strongest heroes for area control and siege. Her power lies not in mobility but in turning a slice of the map into a kill zone: turrets cover the approaches, her spectral wall cuts sightlines, and her heavy barrage smashes fortifications and forces enemies to back off. This guide covers how to unlock her potential in lane and in team fights.
Map Role and Playstyle
McGinnis is a classic sieger and zoner. She is slow and large, so she handles dives and ambushes poorly, but she dominates wherever she has time to dig in. In lane her job is to pressure the enemy laner with turrets and her minigun, calmly bank souls and push toward the Guardian. Late game she becomes a siege tower: the team commits to an objective, McGinnis drops turrets and a wall, and the enemy struggles to even approach the point. That is why you should think ahead and pick fights on your own territory.
Turrets, Healing and the Wall
Mini Turrets are her key ability. They automatically target the nearest enemies and deal steady damage at range. Place them so the enemy can't destroy them with a single shot from around a corner: behind cover, up high, or where your own fire protects them. In lane turrets help you both farm and push, and in a fight several turrets create heavy area pressure. The Medicinal Specter completes this combo: it restores health to McGinnis and allies inside its area. Turn it on ahead of time, before an engage — sustained healing lets your team stand under fire longer and win drawn-out skirmishes around objectives.
The Spectral Wall is a powerful control tool. It blocks movement and sightlines, breaking enemy focus and cutting support off from the initiator. Drop it to block a fleeing target's path, cover your team's retreat or split the enemy formation in a fight. Allies who pass through the wall gain a speed boost — use it for dashes and quick getaways.
Heavy Barrage Ultimate
Heavy Barrage is a powerful area salvo that excels at breaking fortifications and dealing heavy damage to grouped enemies. It's best used on a pinned target: after ally crowd control or your own wall that keeps the enemy from scattering. Beyond hero damage, the barrage noticeably speeds up taking down Guardians and Walkers during a siege, so save it for the decisive push onto an objective.
Build and Positioning
McGinnis loves survivability and fire-rate items: extra health, armor and weapon upgrades that let her hold a position longer and clear zones more effectively. Among spirit items, those that strengthen turrets and reduce ability cooldowns are valuable. The core principle of playing her is simple: never push forward alone, but claim a good spot in advance, set up turrets and a wall, and force the enemy to fight where it benefits you.
