The Unstable Rift is a separate map objective in the current Deadlock build. It no longer begins when a team delivers the Soul Urn. The game selects a lane, shows an early world effect and then gives a global warning before the capture begins.
Watch the lane before the global warning
Valve changed the objective on 30 June. The Rift now appears at roughly seven-minute intervals with a random offset of up to one minute. An effect marks its lane before the global announcement.
A later July update reduced the global warning from 25 seconds to 20 seconds. Teams that notice the earlier lane effect gain more time to clear nearby waves and choose an approach.
The lane effect is the earliest useful signal. A player who notices it can report the lane before the 20-second global warning begins. That extra time allows nearby teammates to finish a purchase or clear one wave. It also tells the far-side player whether a direct rotation is realistic or whether the team should prepare to defend after the Rift is captured.
After a successful capture, the chosen trooper lane determines the next move. The winning team can escort the wave, force defenders to respond and use the opposite side of the map. It can also shop before the pressure reaches a structure. Standing around the empty capture area wastes the reward because its value comes from the advancing wave.
Enter with lanes and health already managed
A team arriving with low health has to surrender space before the capture starts. Clearing the nearest wave first also limits the amount of structure damage lost during the fight.
The capture zone reveals players on the minimap. Hiding inside the area is therefore unreliable. Cover near the lane is more useful for staging an entry or protecting a retreat.
Approach routes matter because the capture area reveals anyone standing inside it. The first player should not assume that entering the circle creates surprise. A durable hero can check the nearest angle while teammates hold wider positions. Damage dealers remain safer when they can see the opening control ability before committing their movement resources.
The comeback scaling changes the risk when the losing team captures. A larger Rift Trooper group carries more health and damage into the selected lane. Because the units do not drop souls, clearing them prevents structural pressure without creating an extra payout. The leading team should identify the lane quickly and avoid giving the comeback wave an uncontested route.
The reward sends Rift Troopers down the lane
Securing the objective creates a wave of five Rift Troopers. A trailing team can receive up to twelve because comeback bonuses scale with its net-worth deficit. The troopers have increased health and damage but do not drop souls.
That wave can pressure a structure while the winning team moves elsewhere. The Rift also pays a bounty, while its capture timing and defensive bonuses favour a team that is behind.
The team should compare health, stamina and major cooldowns before fighting. A hero arriving with empty stamina may be unable to escape the first attack. Another player may have an ultimate returning shortly after the Rift opens. Naming those limits gives the caller a choice between a delayed contest, a steal attempt or a complete retreat.
Action comparison
Spawn Interval: About 7 Minutes, With A 1-Minute Random Offset.
Global Warning: 20 Seconds Before Opening.
Base Trooper Wave: 5 Rift Troopers.
Comeback Wave: Up To 12 Rift Troopers.
The Soul Urn follows a different route
The Soul Urn remains a carry-and-deliver objective. Depositing it does not open the Rift, and old guides that combine the two systems are no longer current.
A clear call should name the objective: Rift for the capture area, Urn for the cross-map delivery. That distinction prevents teammates from moving toward the wrong lane.
Giving up one Rift can be correct when two teammates are dead or too far away. Entering five seconds late with fewer players often adds several deaths to the lost objective. A retreat keeps souls and respawn timers available for the next defence. The team can then clear the Rift Troopers before they create free pressure on a structure.
